PDO Threads
Overview
As skin ages, a decline in collagen and elasticity leads to wrinkles, sagging, and loss of definition. PDO threads offer a non-surgical, minimally invasive way to lift and tighten the skin and stimulate new collagen—an ideal step between injectables and a surgical facelift.
What Are PDO Threads?
PDO (polydioxanone) threads are biocompatible, biodegradable sutures that have been used safely in surgery for decades—most often for suturing incisions—because they fully dissolve in the body over time. In aesthetic medicine, fine PDO threads are placed under the skin to lift sagging tissue, smooth wrinkles, and trigger ongoing collagen production as they dissolve.
How PDO Threads Work
PDO threads have a dual mechanism:
- Mechanical Lift — barbed or anchored threads physically reposition lax tissue, providing immediate lift and contour.
- Biostimulation — as PDO dissolves over 6${EM}9 months, it stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen along the path of the thread, creating a foundation of firmer, thicker tissue that outlasts the threads themselves.
Types of PDO Threads
- Smooth threads (mono) — for fine lines and overall skin tightening through collagen stimulation.
- Twisted threads (cog) — for added volume and structural support.
- Barbed threads (PDO lift threads) — for visible lifting of jowls, cheeks, brows, and neck.
What PDO Threads Treat
- Sagging or lax skin on the face and neck
- Loose jowls and undefined jawline
- Cheek hollowing and mid-face descent
- Nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Expression lines
- Brow drooping
- Skin laxity around the eyes
What to Expect
Before
Your visit begins with a consultation. Your provider designs a thread plan based on your facial structure and goals. Avoid blood thinners and alcohol for 24—48 hours before treatment.
During
The procedure typically takes 30—60 minutes. Local anesthetic is used for comfort. PDO threads are introduced through tiny entry points using a fine cannula or needle.
After
Expect mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the entry points for several days. Most patients return to normal activities within 24—48 hours but should avoid strenuous exercise, dental work, and aggressive facial movements for 1—2 weeks while threads settle.
Results and Longevity
Lift is visible immediately. Threads dissolve over 6—9 months, but the collagen they’ve stimulated continues to support tighter, firmer skin—so overall results typically last 12—18 months. Maintenance treatments help preserve and build on results.
Individual results vary. Your provider will discuss a realistic outlook during your consultation.
