Erbium Laser Resurfacing
Overview
Erbium laser resurfacing is an FDA-approved, advanced dermatologic procedure that uses erbium-doped (Er:YAG) lasers to ablate the epidermal and superficial dermal layers of the skin, allowing healthier skin to regenerate in their place. Erbium is particularly well-suited to patients seeking visible skin rejuvenation with significantly less downtime than traditional CO2 laser resurfacing.
How Erbium Laser Works
The erbium laser emits a 2,940 nm wavelength that is precisely absorbed by water in the skin. Because erbium’s absorption peak is sharply tuned to water, it ablates a thin, controlled layer of tissue with very limited heat spread to surrounding areas. This precision means less thermal damage, less redness, and a faster recovery—while still triggering the healing cascade that drives collagen synthesis and a rejuvenated dermal matrix.
Erbium vs. CO2 Laser
Both erbium (Er:YAG, 2940 nm) and CO2 (10,600 nm) are ablative lasers used for resurfacing. The trade-off is precision vs. depth:
- Erbium — sharper absorption by water, less surrounding heat, faster healing, less redness; best when downtime tolerance is limited or for moderate concerns.
- CO2 — deeper thermal effect, more dramatic collagen stimulation, longer recovery; best for deep wrinkles or pronounced scars.
What Erbium Laser Treats
- Wrinkles and fine lines (rhytides)
- Acne scars, surgical scars, and traumatic scars
- Sun damage and uneven pigmentation (dyschromias)
- Loss of skin texture, clarity, and elasticity
- Rejuvenation of the face, neck, chest, and hands
What to Expect
Before
Your visit begins with a consultation. Your provider evaluates your skin and goals and customizes the depth of treatment. Topical numbing is applied 45—60 minutes before treatment.
During
The treatment typically takes 30—45 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of warm pulses, well-tolerated with numbing.
After
Patients typically experience complete epidermal healing within one to two weeks. Depending on the treatment depth, transient redness may persist for up to one to two months and is easily camouflaged with mineral-tinted SPF.
Results and Longevity
Improvement in tone and texture is often visible once initial healing resolves, with continued refinement over 2—3 months as new collagen develops. Erbium results are long-lasting when paired with consistent daily sun protection.
Individual results vary. Your provider will discuss a realistic outlook during your consultation.
